Director, HR Payroll Operations

Key leader in Anthem’s central Payroll department that supports over 70,000 Anthem associates across the US. Manages and directs a team of Payroll processors, payroll data entry and tax and compliance. This role will set and manage the overall strategy for Payroll across the US, India, Philippines and Israel.

Primary duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Set and manage a multi-year strategy for payroll operations for the US, India, Philippines and Israel payroll processing

  • Lead the US Payroll total team about 20 individual contributor roles in the Payroll Department

  • Ensure efficient payroll processing for an in-house multi-state payroll for over 70,000 employees

  • Responsible for all wage, overtime, withholdings and other payroll related compliance items.

  • Maintain payroll system, data management, data migration, and the flow of information used for the payroll processing, journal entry and tax administration.

  • Continuous Process Improvement in all areas of timekeeping, payroll processing, regulatory reporting, and GL Accounting for payroll related items.

  • Work closely with Corporate Finance and IT Department to manage different payroll systems – this role will manage any 3rd party vendor relationships


  • Requires BS/BA degree and at least 8 years of experience in Human Resources including multi-year experience in payroll processing for a large public company.

  • Prior management/supervisory experience within the payroll area

  • Experience with a Payroll System Implementation and evaluation of different payroll software - Workday, Oracle, or ADP

  • Experience in troubleshooting and solving end-user processing and data problems

  • Thorough knowledge of payroll tax regulations for federal, state, and local tax jurisdictions

  • Flexibility to handle ongoing changes and the ability to interface with other departments

  • Highly detail oriented; strong oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with end-users

  • Strong leadership and management skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
